Yet Another Hat

This one is made from a lacy crocheted thrift store sweater. It's silk. And the crochet did not ravel. I handled it gently, and sewed the pieces together with a straight stitch and then zig zagged the edges. Like always.

In the back, I put a little bit of elastic on this one, and the front brim is stitched in place.

Hi Alana, Very cool that you are making hats. I'm curious though, as the women in our church don't use head coverings...would a hat like this be appropriate for you to wear to church? Thanks!

It would certainly be appropriate in an Orthodox Church. There aren't any hard and fast "Hat versus scarf rules" in Orthodoxy. Most women who cover in Church do so with some sort of scarf. I've also seen a hat now and again. Mantillas, chapel veils, etc.

The nice thing about a hat is: Is it a "fashion accessory", or is it a "headcovering"? Perhaps one can cover one's head without causing a scandal if a "headcovering" would be scandalous. Of course, there are those who would judge a hat as not being "religious" or "prayer-coveringish" enough and scandalized in the opposite way. So ultimately it's between a woman and her God what is or isn't on her head. Just my two cents.
