More Small Spaces

Our living room is not very big. We've had various arrangements over the years, but right now I'm particularly happy with it. This is looking in from just inside the front door.

My newly organized and "created" desk area. I'm so proud. St. Catherine watches over our homeschool. The other icons are St. Anna holding Mary, and of course the Holy Virgin holding Jesus. I stole the plastic stacking cubes from upstairs, and I mostly hate anything plastic in the living room, but they will have to serve for now.

Hey, is that a framed photo of the weeping icon of Christ from the Orthodox church in Atlanta (roughly 17 years ago)?

Just curious. My dad has the same photos.

Don't have HGTV but I have gone into a friend's home once, at her request, and did just that: made it over with just what she had. It was fun. I like doing it here at home with my own stuff, too.

Tell your kids to be grateful they don't live in Brooklyn, NY. The common living arrangement, among working stiffs, was to live in a two-bedroom "railroad" apartment, so called because you walked from one end of the apartment to the other through *everybody's* bedroom. It was usual to have the living room at the front of the house and the kitchen at the back, with the two bedrooms in the middle. Sleeping arrangements in the then-common 4- 6-child household were that the parents slept on a fold-out sofa in the living room (!), the girls shared one 8 x 10 room, and the boys the other 8 x 10 room; and you had to walk through everybody's bedroom to get to the kitchen or bathroom, which was usually just off the kitchen. Your house (looks like a Cape Cod, BTW) looks luxurious by comparison, and I *love* your style.

We live in a small house, too, laid out without much consideration for efficiency. My motto is that everything must multitask, be utilitarian, or it's no good. We like to decorate, but it has a minimalist feel because too much would be too much.

I like what you did with the girls' room. That was really a great idea. I love to thumb through the Ikea catalog every so often for ideas about arranging furniture in small spaces.

The pencil drawing of Jesus was a sketch done of the icon of Christ at our parish done by someone my dh sponsored.
