20th High School Reunion

It's coming up next month. I'm totally not planning to go. I think I'd rather go shovel dog poo at the park.

I got an e-mail this morning about it. All the usual "cool and involved" people who were "cool and involved" back in High School are on the reunion committee. I guess people don't really change all that much, and I have no desire to confirm that fact in real life.

So, how do my blog readers feel about High School reunions? Have you been? Was it a waste of time and money?

I don't think I'm quite far enough out of high school to start considering the option of a reunion, but at this point, I wouldn't go. There's really not a lot about my high school years that I'd want to reminisce on, though maybe if I had maintained some of those high school relationships post-graduation, I'd consider it. Otherwise it would be another party where I would feel out of the loop and just stand there trying not to look so awkward.

A few years ago, I was going to go to my 10th reunion a few years ago, but the place where it was supposed to be closed...it was cancelled. I really have no friends from high school, so it's no big deal to me. I've run into a few people who I went to school with and enjoyed our conversations, though!

Homeschooled. :) Another perk.

We recently went to my husband's 20th reunion. He was disappointed that more of his old friends didn't come, but all things considered, I had more fun than I thought I would. Maybe it was easier for me in that I didn't have anything to measure up to. We did get to see a few of his good friends so it was worth it. I am about 99% sure I don't want to go to mine...there was too much "I'm sorry, I don't remember you at all" at my husband's and I know it will be worse at mine!

I had fun being good-looking ten years later after being the goofy dork in high school. But other than that everyone is the same. It was sort of nice to see a few people.

Well, I feel exactly as you do Alana! My 20th has already come and gone though, if they even did it! I would however like to be a fly on the wall out of curiosity to see what has become of some people! But, only if I could be out of flyswatter reach!

Well, I just dropped out of high school (to go to college early, no worries!), so I don't know if I'll even have reunions. But when I was younger I went with my mother to her 25th, and it was both fun and a little painful to meet the people she grew up around and see how far they didn't end up going. I'm glad I got to see that, though.

Well, since I went to school all 12 years with many of the kids, I do go and enjoy. Plus I married one of my classmates.

I with you Alana, no thanks reunion time.

I went to my 5th reunion. No one had changed much.

I went to a picnic type reunion that got thrown together real quick. I discovered that, those girls who were stunningly beautiful in high school, are no longer. And those guys who were sob's then, still are. Jocks are still jocks. And cheerleaders are still cheerleaders.

Then I saw pictures from a 30th reunion and absolutely recognized no one. Someone captioned one of the pics with "It looks like a weight watchers meeting."

Those kinds of comments I could do without.

I'll stay home, thankyouverymuch.

I'm seriously debating goin to mine this fall. My best friend is from high school, and if she can spring free from her kids for a weekend, we might go together. We went to our 10th together and had a ball, just being goofy. Of course, playing all 80s music as you drive from event to event is a must.

My class has failed to have an official reunion, even though it's been 19 years since we graduated. However, we have had several informal get togethers with a handful of people at a time over the years, and I love it when I can go to those. Some of the coolest people I've ever known were my high school friends, and I am thrilled to still have them in my life.

Alana, as your high school classmate who also won't make the reunion, let me give you feedback on my 10 year reunions for both high schools I attended, and a correction:

It's not the "cool and involved" people who organized HHS' 10-year reunion, and NONE of that clique stuff happened. Everyone was on an equal level: people who didn't give me the time of day in high school were happy to see me, and people who were good friends didn't necessarily start it up again. Mostly both my reunions were just neat, fun, relaxed events with no drama or tension. It's a place to keep things light...you get out what you put into it. That said, if you know your aversion to the idea, trust your instincts and don't go.

I was thinking of going, until I realized that the few people I really want to see(you mainly)I can see on my own time without all of the stress. You, me, and Lisa can meet for a girls weekend and that would mean more to me than anything. :)

I went to my 10 year reunion and enjoyed it. The dance was the most humorous part to me ... in HS all everyone wanted was to turn down the lights and turn up the music ... at our 10 year reunion all everyone wanted was to turn up the lights and turn down the music so we could talk! LOL I would have liked to go to my 20, but was too pregnant to travel.

However, I was in a small school where I knew everyone - and I think that makes a difference.

There's a possible reunion for my high school and while I hated all the silly cliques and such that went on I was still considering going.

The thing is that several people from our class (graduated 1994) are now dead. One murdered, a few overdosed on drugs, one hit by a bus. In the year below ours, there were two recent suicides.

It makes things feel really different. I think it makes the silly high school stuff seem worse than silly - it makes us realise there are more important things in life than being cool and popular. Everyone has realised that by now, and I expect the reunion would be quite different to the old school days. Thankfully.
Funny you should mention it, I just laid out my thoughts on high school reunions here. The short version is that, no, I am not a reunion person either. :)

I went to my ten-year high school reunion with some trepidation. I didn't feel like I'd accomplished much in those ten years.

But it turned out: Nobody else had either! :) After all, we'd only been out of college six years at that point. I saw a lot of people I knew and had a lot of fun finding out what people were doing. And nobody looked very different.

And after going to your reunion, I highly recommend seeing Grosse Pointe Blank.
